We welcome volunteers at the shelter, 14 and older, to walk, groom, and play with the cats, dogs, puppies and kittens in our care.
You may volunteer between the hours of 12 - 6 Monday-Friday, and 12 - 5 Saturday and Sunday.
Volunteers must sign-in and are supervised by management. Staff will discuss the do's and dont's for both your safety and that of the animals. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a dog and/or cat fixed and provide important TLC to a shelter animal.
Enjoy working with the public? We always welcome friendly volunteers to help answer our busy phones, or even assist with office projects such as follow up phone calls, filing, data input. If you are reliable and available during the day, please stop by and meet our manager, and sign up to help out at our busy front desk, any day of the week.
Spend pleasant Saturday afternoons with animals and pet lovers as an HSH Offsite Adoption Volunteer.
If you're interested in working directly with animals and finding them good homes, please consider joining our PetSmart team. Volunteers are needed to help transport, manage dogs and puppies off-site, and must be enjoy working with the public.
We are at PetSmart/Harlingen on the 2nd Saturday of each month.
Volunteers must sign up in advance, receive orientation and training, and be reliable.
We are also in need of a PetSmart Coordinator to liaison between the shelter and PetSmart, organize the animals, and manage volunteers. The coordinator requires about 10 hours of planning each month, in addition to one afternoon a month at PetSmart. This position is very rewarding when you see animals finding homes as a direct result of your efforts.
If you have the time and can make a year commitment to this volunteer position, please contact board member Karen Lillard at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our most valued volunteers are our Winter Texan residents. We can use your help with animal care, special functions, and for outreach into your communities throughout the Harlingen and surrounding community. Please donʼt forget to stop by when you pull-in for our lovely winter season.
We are always in need of volunteers to assist us with our events throughout the year (annual fundraiser, parades, Bark in the Bark, vaccine clinics, yard sale).
If you are interested in helping from time-to-time, please stop by the shelter and complete a volunteer application. We will contact you as our needs arise.
Every month we have animals who are given the opportunity to go to breed rescue groups outside the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Typically we are in need of drivers to transport anywhere from one individual animal to a small group (each safely crated) from our shelter to a nearby city, most often Corpus Christi, sometimes San Antonio.
If you are willing to donate your time and gas, have reliable transportation, you would be providing a great service to many animals being offered a chance to go to private-shelters and rescue groups.
Please contact Eileen Mahoney at email@example.com or (956)425-7297, to join our transportation team.
PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS and help reduce euthanasia numbers in shelters!
