Adopt A Pet

HARLINGEN HUMANE SOCIETY

ADOPTION

Welcome a new companion in your home!

We have all sorts of adoptable animals, both cats and dogs, youngsters and adults, large and small.

Some are previously owned and arrive in good physical shape, many even trained, others have survived tremendous neglect and yet maintain the most beautiful and loving dispositions.

There are often popular purebreds and plenty of one-of-kind mix-breeds. A few might be considered special needs because of a manageable or treatable health condition.

In the end, you must decide the best fit with your lifestyle and be willing to commit for up to 15 years or more.

Adoption Fees

$125. for canines (dogs and puppies) and $100. for felines (cats and kittens)
Includes all first round of shots, spay or neuter, microchip, and 30 day pet insurance. This is a bargain, by the way!

What animals do you have available for adoption?

HSH has cats and dogs of all ages. The animals vary in breed, color, disposition, gender, and size. We have big ones, small ones, old ones, young ones, black ones, blue ones, we have them all. When you are ready to adopt, it is a lot like the expression, "A kid in a candy shop."

What are the procedures for adoption?

Once you decide on which animal you want to adopt an adoption application must be completed. During this process HSH will ask questions such as: Can you have pets where you live? For the large breed dogs: Do you have a fenced in backyard? After reviewing your application and it is approved, you are welcome to adopt.

Questions you should be asking:

---> Do I have time to commit to a pet? Animals provide companionship, but they too need to receive companionship back, daily care, love, exercise and handling to maintain their emotional and physical needs.

---> Leaving them alone in a backyard, or tethered endlessly on chains is not a healthy nor appropriate for them.

---> Do I want an active breed to accompany an active family? Or, do I want a mellow-fellow more interested in lap time and leisurely walks?

---> Does anyone in the family have a pet allergy?

---> Do I have a safe environment: fenced in yard? Minimum exposure to fleas and ticks? (some yards need to be maintained and treated)

---> Do I have supervision around children and other pets?

---> Can I afford vet care, both routine - such as shots and monthly preventatives, as well as a possible emergency or unexpected expense?

---> Can I afford grooming if necessary?

---> If considering adopting a puppy or kitten, am I ready to provide the structure and training early on so they well behaved, social, and welcome lifetime members of your family?

---> Am I prepared to provide love and care for the duration of their life - generally talking 15+ years.

Thank you for your interest in adopting a shelter pet.

If your answer is no to any of the above questions, or you do not know, then perhaps you are not ready just yet to make a lifetime commitment to that special cat or dog. However, if you meet the standards of a good pet owner and know what will best fit your family and lifestyle, we are sure to have the pet for you.

PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS and help reduce euthanasia numbers in shelters!
